Step inside Sift and you are transported to another world – one that is covered in bright pastels, polka dots, birthday candles, something called “cruffles” (a cake/truffle hybrid) and apocalyptically-good cupcakes, one appropriately dubbed “The Sky is Falling.”
I’ve been wanting to check out the California St. bakery ever since I read that they make a Samoa cupcake. You heard me right. The best Girl Scout cookie (in my opinion) in cupcake form. Could there be anything better?
My verdict after today: probably not.
The Samoa cupcake was seriously perfect – the cake itself (coconut flavored) was moist, the frosting (caramel) amazing but not too sweet, the filling (chocolate ganache) a perfect add-in. The toasted coconut topping somehow tasted like little bits of an actual Samoa cookie. All-in-all it really took the Samoa to the next level.
I also tried the Battle Royale (Almond cake with a blueberry tequila filling, topped with acai berry cream cheese frosting. Also the Food Network’s, “Cupcake Wars”, winner.), which was also great, but a little fruity for my taste. But if it’s your thing, it’d be to die for. I can’t wait to go back and try more. Susie Cakes might have just dropped to my number two favorite cupcake spot in the city…
